We have found that many people who are new to computers, and even some who have been using computers for quite some time, may not be aware of many of the features, benefits, and dangers involved in using a computer. Below are a just few tips to help you understand your computer better.
Free Programs: Many free programs that can be downloaded from the internet may contain Spyware and/or could be harmful to your computer in some way. Always do your homework before clicking yes to ensure safe surfing! Check our Resource Pages to find many free programs and tools that we recommend to help your computing be safer and more productive. Screen Resolution: Many computer screens come with a default setting that may not take advantage of your screen's size and clarity . Click here to find out how to change your screen resolution. Screen Capture: There are times when you may want to "capture" what is on your screen in what is called a "screenshot." For example, sometimes, you may want to save an error message that pops up to help you describe problems your computer is having. In order to capture a screenshot, simply press the "Prt Scr" button (Windows) which is unsually located to the right of the "F12" key at the top of your keyboard. Nothing will display to say you have successfully completed the screen capture, but that is ok. Then, open a program such as MS Word and go to "edit" and choose "paste", or hold the "Ctrl" key and hit "V". An image of what was on your screen will be pasted into the current document. You can then save this for future reference. Internet Cache: Your computer "remembers" web pages that you have visited so that the next time you visit, these sites load faster. Although this saves time, every once in a while you will need to clear your cache. This allows your computer to have a fresh start and can prevent many internet-related problems. Click here to learn how to clear your cache in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Character Maps: Ever wonder how to get symbols like ® or © to show up? Your computer comes with a character map to select these symbols and more. Simply go to your start menu and look for "character map" which is often in the folder called accessories. Email Options: Microsoft Outlook gives you the choice of adding a "from" option and "bcc" (blind carbon copy) option. Once you open a new message click on "Options" at the top and check the boxes next to the fields you want to include in your message. New Computers: When purchasing a new computer be sure to save all the disks that come with it. These disks are important and will be necessary for you to bring to the store should your computer need certain repairs. Difference between the address bar and search bar: The address bar is where you would type internet addresses that you already know, such as, www.landmarkcomputers.com. A search bar allows you to perform a search by keywords, such as "computer service whitehall." Windows Firewall will only protect you from incoming attacks, but your personal information can still be sent out. Click Here to find out more about privacy protection.
